A global model of very long term economic development
Presented on Friday 7 December 2007 by Mr Diery Seck, Director of the United Nations African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP)
The reasons why some societies develop faster than others still remain difficult to understand and at times seem mysterious. Mr Diery Seck, Director of IDEP, has developed a model which seeks to identify the very long term determinants of human economic progress.
The model looks at the impact of the characteristics of the Earth’s geo-climatic bands, of the variations in the availability of natural resources and of the human resource capacity and the learning processes of each society. The specific cases of autarkic and outward societies were examined
