Improving the quality of Basic
Education in Brazil: the role of teachers
Presented by Abdeljalil Akkari, Professor, University of Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday 27 January 2009.
Over the last two decades, Brazil has achieved undeniable progress in education: more children, including from disadvantaged groups, have access to and remain in school. The country is actually in a transition period, by seeking to go beyond quantitative progress and achieve quality improvement.
Based on a recent study, the seminar presented the point of view and potential contribution of teachers in the process of improving quality. The contribution of pre-service training, the status of the teaching profession and the commitment of public authorities to education was discussed. Moreover, the seminar offered an opportunity to discuss the “political and pedagogical” concept as an innovation which may mobilize the teaching corps in everyschool.
