Access to education is a basic human right, including for people who live in situations of emergency and conflict. IIEP works with governments, donors and organizations to provide education in such contexts.
In order to support ministries in reducing the risk of disaster and conflict, IIEP and UNICEF’s West and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) have developed Guidance Notes for educational planners; integrating conflict and disaster risk reduction into education sector planning. This tool has already been used in Burkina Faso and Chad to integrate disaster preparation and prevention strategies into their education sector planning processes. The Guidance Notes put forward ways in which each of the steps of the planning cycle can contribute to reducing the risk of predictable, recurrent emergencies, and also better responding to the sudden onset of disaster and conflict.
IIEP also partners with the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE), in particular through participation in the INEE Working Group on Education and Fragility and the Global Education Cluster.
