01 June 2016

The Assistant Minister of Education of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Chen Shun, visited IIEP-UNESCO this week to discuss the new Education 2030 agenda.

The visit aimed at identifying key educational planning priorities and trends that could assist China in drawing up its roadmap for the new global education goals, which involve learners of all ages and all forms of education, both formal and non-formal. The Chinese government is working on creating a plan entitled Education Modernization for China 2030, in order to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and achieve modernization by 2050.

IIEP experts present during the visit identified a number of points to take into consideration over the next 15 years as countries, including China, forge their own path towards achieving inclusive quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all. Going forward, the IIEP experts said planning for Education 2030 will require flexible sector-wide educational planning.

Major trends expected to gain traction over the next 15 years include:

  • Pressure for higher levels of learning for all;
  • Redistribution of education resources to respond to spatial changes of school populations;
  • Urban education markets including private education, investment from households, Early childhood care and education (ECCE), and private tutoring;
  • Demand for participation from different stakeholders within the education sector.

The Assistant Minister was accompanied by Mr. Du Yue, Secretary-General of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, and with a delegation of 18 high-level officers from the Ministry of Education, the Chinese National Institute of Education Sciences, Shanghai Academy of Educational Sciences and the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO.
