Education and the economic crisis: Is education a victim or part of the solution?
The current economic crisis, the most severe since the Great Depression of the 1930s, is global in its spread and effects. In most countries, the national income shrank, asset values fell, and jobs and income were lost for millions pushing them into hardship. While many a crisis in the past resulted from reckless public spending, the current crisis stems from the profligacy of the private sector.
How does the economic crisis affect education? Public income and spending on education may decline delaying achievement of MDGs. Millions of households and people are pushed below the poverty line forcing them not to send, if not withdraw, their children from schools. At the same time, public policies in many countries see education as an essential factor in long-term recovery and part of the stimulus packages. Whether education would be a victim or a beneficiary of the economic crisis is the focus of the IIEP strategic debate.
