Strengthening inclusive education systems through inclusive research practice: The case of Ethiopia

Ethiopia hosts the second-largest refugee population in Africa, with over 900,000 refugees and asylum-seekers. What does it mean for a country to answer the education needs of all children among them? How do host communities and schools cope with it? Come and join our session with Education Development Trust on strengthening inclusivity in Ethiopia’s education system through inclusive research. Dr. Stephanie Bengtsson of IIEP-UNESCO will shatter the traditional ways of doing research on an education system and bring to the forefront a new consultative, iterative approach that involves a variety of education actors in meaningful ways.

Emerging findings from a multi-country study exploring the effective management of teachers in refugee contexts

Teachers are at the heart of learning. Policy influence can also have a large effect on the teaching profession. This is no exception in refugee contexts. Even more so, teachers in these settings are members of affected communities and can be powerful agents of positive policy reform. However, there is little data about teachers of refugees and as a result, how policy at the global, national, and local level affect these teachers. In this quick-fire session, hear findings from an Ethiopian case study on effective teacher management in refugee-hosting communities and plans to extend the project within East Africa and in the Middle East.

Oral Session: Conflict and Crisis
8:30am – 10:30am
Thursday, 19 September 2019
Room 15
Presenters: Katja Hinz, IIEP-UNESCO, and Hassan Ahmed, Education Development Trust.

Mainstreaming disability issues in education sector analysis and planning – reflections and plan

All children and youth – no matter who they are, or where they are – have the right to a quality education. This is no exception for children with disabilities, as reflected in the SDG 4 agenda and the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. However, despite global and national commitments, many children with disabilities remain out of school, or are unable to learn. Join this panel at UKFIET to learn about a framework for integrating disability inclusive education into education sector analysis and planning, an important milestone in fostering inclusive education systems.
