Welcome to our new trainees in educational planning and management

09 January 2018

The start of the New Year marks an exciting time for the IIEP community. A new cohort of educational planners has come to the IIEP Paris headquarters for the residential phase of an intensive training in educational planning and management.

This year’s 17 trainees come from Niger, Senegal, Haiti, Guyana, Afghanistan, Cambodia and Finland. A majority of these countries represent long-standing partners of IIEP where there are ongoing technical assistance projects to support the Ministries of Education in planning and managing stronger education systems.

IIEP’s training programmes are geared to strengthening national capacities to analyse and formulate sound education policies and realistic education plans, and to effectively manage human and financial resources in the sector.

In a welcome address to the new trainees on 8 January 2017, IIEP Director Suzanne Grant Lewis said the new trainees will not only benefit from a strong theoretical and practical programme at IIEP, but from the experiences and knowledge of international colleagues and peers.

“We aim to help you become better educational planners and leaders in your governments. We want you to be change agents in your countries and we are here to assist you with that,” said Grant Lewis. “We will also be working with you on general competencies which can help you build those capacities.”

The current trainees are pursuing either the one-year Advanced Training Programme, which is in its 53rd year, or the shorter programme, Education Sector Planning. The residential phase for both options follows a three-month online phase, which participants completed in their home countries.

In March, five educational planners from Lao People’s Democratic Republic will come to Paris after completing a customized ESP distance course delivered in their own country. A further two trainees will also join then. Modularisation provides professionals with more flexibility in completing this Master’s equivalent Advanced Training Programme.

Others will join the two-week Specialized Courses Programme at IIEP between April and May 2018, as well as the various distance education courses and the MOOC that IIEP is offering this year.
