World Teachers Day 2020 takes place during extraordinary circumstances. In March 2020, schools worldwide shut down as COVID-19 reached pandemic levels. Today, many school systems remain affected, with teachers having to implement social distancing and online learning. While the pandemic will not last forever, this will leave an indelible mark on the teaching profession, in both positive and negative ways.

“ It is no exaggeration to say that the world is at a crossroads and, now more than ever, we must work with teachers to protect the right to education and guide it into the unfolding landscape brought about by the pandemic."

This year’s theme is “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future.” In line with this, World Teachers' Day is an opportunity to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide: to highlight the achievements of teachers and their astounding level of support in cultivating a new generation of global citizens. It is also a day to listen to teachers, amplify their voices, and draw attention to challenges facing this crucial profession.
