International Women’s Day 2010
Achieving Gender Equality

Girls still account for more than half the world’s out-of-school children; two-thirds of the 759 million adult illiterates are female.
(Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-general, 8 March 2010).

IIEP joins the global impetus to ensure gender equality in the education sector.

In 2010, the work of IIEP on gender issues will focus on the underrepresentation of women in educational decision making.

IIEP will soon be carrying out a joint study with Ministries of Education in a selected number of countries based upon which it will design a capacity development program the purpose of which is to increase the number of females in the decision making positions.

IIEP will publish analyses of the most recent data concerning gender disparities related to achievement in developing countries, which includes:

  • An analysis of teacher gender and its relationship with the gender differences
  • A policy brief on trends of gender differences in achievement.

Information and documents on IIEP’s projects on Gender issues will be updated on our website.
