A propos de la publication

The object behind this study is to report on a joint ILO/IIEP research effort to explore into new ways of organizing the analysis of labour force data collected through ad hoc surveys or by censuses. It deals with the macro-level approach to developing a methodology for studying the interactions between education and the world of work, with a view to improving educational planning methods, and attempts, through the analysis of available data (census, employment surveys, tracer studies, etc.), to move away from the traditional classifications of occupational/educational structures with a view to producing a more adequate basis for relating education to employment. The authors develop an algorithm in order to aggregate very detailed categories of jobs in such a way as to produce occupational structures as closely related as possible to educational structures. They then proceed to test the data from four different surveys: (1) a household survey in the Sudan, (2) a manufacturing industry survey in Singapore, (3) another in the Sudan, and (4) a special survey carried out by Gerald Fry in Thailand. In conclusion, the authors propose an agenda for further research.
