Based on a survey carried out in 1983 which looked at 10 workers' colleges in different parts of China, illustrates the important role these colleges play both in the national higher education and in adult higher education, discusses how workers' colleges have contributed towards improving the existing stock of manpower and have helped to provide a 'second route' for young people anxious to obtain higher education
