Strategies to improve access and retention of vulnerable children

Many children still face major physical and social barriers to education.

Research shows that most out-of-school children are in families with uneducated mothers, live in rural areas, come from low-income households. Girls are particularly numerous among them.

Research Project

Monitoring and evaluating access to quality of education for vulnerable groups.

Primary school girls from a rural areaEfforts to ensure the expansion of educational opportunities have been made by many nations during the second half of the 20th Century, and major gains have been achieved in this area by both developed and developing countries.

However, much remains to be done in this area for certain ‘"vulnerable" groups, such as girls, orphans, the poor, ethnic minorities, and children in remote areas.

This research study will employ data derived from SACMEQ's most recent cross-national educational policy research project (the SACMEQ III Project) to undertake a detailed analysis of vulnerable groups of pupils.

The analyses of the data will commence with a comparative-descriptive approach that compares vulnerable groups of pupils with the general pupil population.

It will also employ a Hierarchical Linear Modelling (HLM) approach which will generate a powerful means of identifying factors that provide a more powerful explanation of the educational achievement levels of vulnerable groups of pupils.
