Nicola Johnson is the Chief Planning Officer at the Ministry of Education in Guyana. She has worked in the education sector for more than 25 years and has collaborated with IIEP on several projects, spanning the latest Education Sector Plan, a training for school improvement, a Risk Management Strategy to protect education from risks and hazards, and more.

International Day of Education matters to me because it's an opportunity to highlight the importance of education as a social good for government, community, and individuals and to reiterate the implications of ensuring that no one is left behind, thus highlighting equitable quality education for all.

As an educational planner, I need to make sure that I have a “bird’s eye” view of the system to ensure that planned interventions are derived and developed from a system and evidence-based perspective, thereby ensuring the internal coherence of the sector’s plans and programmes.

The world needs to invest in education because it is the single most important factor that can contribute to the development of any society.
