IIEP to step up its cooperation with the UAE
On 6 February, IIEP Director Khalil Mahshi and His Excellency Mr Abdullah Ali Musabbeh Alneaimi of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) discussed the way forward for IIEP’s cooperation with the Regional Center for Educational Planning (RCEP), based in Sharjah (UAE).

RCEP was established in 2001 with support from IIEP to “enhance and support the endeavours of educational systems in the Arab region through training, consultancy, and dissemination of knowledge in the realm of educational planning, management and leadership”.

Cooperation in 2013 and beyond will enable RCEP to develop its own capacity and expertise to provide training programmes for the six Member States of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Yemen. Two concrete activities will be pursued in the coming six months:

  • implementation of a regional training course on the use of simulation models, support to a regional initiative to develop national education accounts in GCC countries.
  • In addition, together with the UAE Ministry of Education, RCEP will organise the study visit of IIEP’s 32 trainees enrolled in the Advanced Training Programme. This visit will provide an opportunity for the UAE to showcase its education system and allow for fruitful dialogue with planners and professionals in education from 25 countries.

In line with the UNESCO Education Strategy, strengthening regional institutions is a key implementation strategy for IIEP for the period 2014–2021 – one through which the Institute aims to leverage its own training programmes and facilitate sustainable capacities locally.
