To be highly effective and efficient in the provision of support services to the Secretariat”

Five officers from the Department of Education have graduated with a certificate for participating in a distance course on Education Planning for Safety, Resilience and Social Cohesion.

The distance education course was organized by the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP). The modules include the Introduction to Education Sector Planning for Safety, Resilience and Social Cohesion, Analysis, Policies and Programming, Cost and Financing and Monitoring and Evaluation.

Deputy Secretary for TVET & UNESCO Mr. Godfrey Yerua commended the officers for completing the online distance education program on time while still performing their daily tasks as public servants.

Mr. Yerua said disasters and conflicts can have a devastating impact on the economic and social development of countries and the graduates can now put into practice what they have learnt to support risk reduction interventions that cover predictable, recurrent emergencies, as well as sudden-onset disasters or conflicts in the education planning sector.

“This distance course aims to strengthen the capacity of education sectors to plan for and prevent the impact of crisis by taking participants through a systematic examination of the ways in which education authorities can integrate safety, resilience, and social cohesion in national planning processes,” he said.

Executive Director for the PNG National Commission for UNESCO Mr. Andrew Angobe who also graduated said 800 participants from 50 countries took up the online course which was funded by the Asia Pacific Regional Office for UNICEF in Bangkok, Thailand.

The graduates were the First Assistant Secretary for UNESCO & the Executive Director for the PNG National Commission for UNESCO Mr Andrew Angobe, Assistant Secretary for TVET Curriculum Mrs Rossa Apelis, Acting National Librarian Mrs Mary Warus, Senior Planning and Sttategic Officer Mr Peter Lagia and Research Officer Mr. Richard Potihin.
