Teacher codes of conduct: expanding the scope of knowledge

IIEP recently translated and published the French version of “Guidelines for the design and effective use of teacher codes of conduct", which will increase the Institute’s efforts in the development and effective use of a code to include the francophone world.

 

IIEP has also been responding to country’s needs for assistance in this area. More specifically, in March 2012 IIEP participated in the preliminary phase for the elaboration of a chart of ethics by Morocco’s Mohammed V University. In addition, in June 2012, IIEP assisted the Lao People’s Democratic Republic with the preparation of a national code of conduct for its teachers. 

Moreover, the Institute updates its platform on teacher codes of conduct on a regular basis. A new e-forum on teacher codes (for francophone speakers) will be held in December 2012 and will be announced shortly on IIEP’s website!

 

The annual international forum organized by IIEP’s Buenos Aires office will focus on teachers. Held on 10-11 October 2012, policy-makers, practitioners and academics from various countries will discuss teacher education policies: training, regulations and professional development. Keynote speeches and panel discussions will be broadcast live on the dedicated website.

 

IIEP continued its research on teachers at the secondary education level where challenges are becoming pressing. An expert meeting held in November 2011, bringing together a range of practitioners from ministries of education, international agencies and donors, as well as academics, helped to better define areas of critical importance for further investigation.

 

As a follow-up, case-studies on national secondary teacher management policies and systems have been launched to contribute to the knowledge base in this area. These will be available online in 2013.

 

At UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, the 2012 World Teachers’ Day celebration will highlight the need to attract top graduates to teaching and to raise the status of teachers.

 

World Teachers’ Day, held annually on October 5th since 1994 - when it was created by UNESCO - celebrates teachers worldwide. Its aim is to mobilize support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers.
