From 16 to 18 July, IIEP-UNESCO, alongside partners, supported the Kenyan Ministry of Education (MoE) to disseminate the country’s Education Disaster Management Policy in Turkana County. The three-day workshop, held in Lodwar, brought together representatives from the education sector, and related fields, from all seven sub-counties.
The workshop provided a unique opportunity to “demystify disaster management”, as one participant noted, by putting the policy into practice. At the end of the workshop, the participants had established an Education Disaster Management Committee for Turkana County – a key element of the policy aimed at improving disaster risk management in all counties in Kenya. Moving forward, such committees will also be established at sub-county and school levels.
During the workshop, participants also began to develop a work plan for a county-level Education Preparedness and Response Plan (EPRP) for Turkana County, which aimed to address risks including droughts, floods, and insecurity. The county-level EPRP will inform the development of sub-county and school disaster risk management work plans.
IIEP’s support of the workshop was part of the Institute’s three-year programme with the European Commission’s Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI).
